Born into Brothels, by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski,
is the winner of the 77th annual Academy Award for Best Documentary
Feature. A tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative
power of art, Born into Brothels is a portrait of several unforgettable
children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their
mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based
photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to
look at the world with new eyes.

The film, released by THINKFilm,
premiered theatrically at the Film Forum in New York City in December
2004. It has since opened in over one hundred theatres nationwide. It
premiered on HBO/Cinemax on Tuesday, August 16th, 2005.

The photographs taken by the children in Born into Brothels are available for purchase in the Kids’ Gallery, and as a signed limited-edition portfolio, or as a compilation in our companion book. 100% of proceeds from print sales go directly to support the children’s education.

PS.1 in New York City is currently exhibiting a project called Emergency Room.
For this one-room exhibition on the third floor, over thirty artists
have been asked to create and install works which are directly reacting
to events of the previous 24 hours – a rhythm that recalls the daily
news cycles of printed media.

On each day, an artist will install a new work, the pieces stay on
view until the next day at 12.30 when they are moved to an adjacent
archive space and replaced by something fresh. Artists include Susanne Schuricht from Berlin, Peter Lind, Mike Estabrook, Raphaele Shirley and Vandana Jain. PS.1 have also put up a blog along with the project.

Through March 19th 2007.

ICC in Tokyo is currently running an exhibition called OpenSky2.0, which showcases various artifacts relevant to Kazuhiko Hachiya‘s ambitious ongoing project with its ultimate goal of developing a personal « flying machine. »

Hachiya’s previous works include Inter Dis-Communication Machine, Seeing Is Believing, AirBoard (a jet-powered skateboard) — to name a few. He’s also the creator of PostPet, a popular email client application in which Kawaii digital pets take care of email messages.

The sky so far seems to be a « closed » space in which « end-users »
cannot easily participate in. Imagine an « open » sky in which anyone can
fly freely — it would be so nice — but making it actually happen
would be extremely difficult. The OpenSky project started in 2003 and,
so far, a flying machine was designed, a half-size radio-controlled
prototype was built, a full-size aircraft was built and tested. It is
being integrated with jet engines and the plan is to test the next
version of the flying machine with a person on board. The exhibition
will last till March 11.
